Different Era. Same Heather. Still Awesome.
Currently on a "creative hiatus" for the last 2 years.. what a funk.
I have been having crazy dreams lately.
I was obsessed with INDEX CARDS last night. I kept asking my mom “Do you have any index cards I could borrow?” “Yeah I have some in the car.” ….. “Hey Mom did you grab those index cards for me yet *anxiously* ” “No not yet.”
FOR LIKE AN HOUR I WAS ASKING FOR INDEX CARDS. IT WAS A VERY TENSE SITUATION.
Why didn’t I just go out to her car and get them myself???
…. and more importantly WHY did I need index cards???
… and getting laughed at repeatedly is NOT encouraging - even if it is by a really cute guy. But I try.
Also, skype sucks. Cutting in and out does not help the process at all..
This totally made my day. Watch it. Smile. You’re welcome.
One of the best pictures of me taken from that weekend.. Side note: I only smoke when I drink… Not that often.
So Monday I went to a job interview in Grand Rapids.
A VIDEO JOB INTERVIEW.
EDITING FOR A TV SHOW.
I was really nervous. Well not extremely nervous, but I do have a major comfort barrier issue with meeting new people. BUT practice makes perfect. So I went. Working third shift, I get out at 6am, and then edited together a demo reel. Put together some of my best work, and brought along my best shooting scripts of the two years I worked at Herman Miller, including a few from Film Fights. Crashed around 9am. Woke up at 4 to make it out to take a shower and get ready for Grand Rapids (one hour away) by 5.
On my way there, I looked up the address to see the owner of this company had emailed me after setting up the interview on Saturday. less than 2 hours after I had fell asleep to tell me “Thanks for your interest but we are no longer interested in your service.”
Now, here’s a little background information. 2 years ago, I had an interview set up with this very guy. He had me call him. Asked me my height, asked me my weight. HUNG UP THE PHONE when I said my weight. I was baffled. I was applying for editing. Not acting. Crew. Not talent.
So I decided since I was already almost there I would confront this guy. Showed up. Got thrown into a writer’s meeting. INSTANTLY CLICKED with everyone there. (the owner was not there yet.) When he saw me he kept making side comments to the co-producer with “I will talk to you about this later.” The meeting was over. Went well.
So I grabbed the owner and co-producer to ask why the change of heart in 2 days. Turns out I was asking for too much money ($10/hr). They are just a cable access sketch comedy show looking for syndication. You get paid per script accepted; and entire sketch shot/edited.
Having just clicked with everyone there… I decided Hey. this reminds me of college.. a group of dedicated wacky actors not getting paid. Good ideas getting thrown around.. great passion. Great on my resume, and healthy for a demo reel. Plus every time they get a contracted Sponsor I get thrown a little bonus.
So I’m sticking around.
The next day I get a call from my friend, Eric. Looks like his company want to send me to Ethiopia, Gana (sp?), & Honduras for a week each to make vidblogs of how a product they donate benefits the area. Traveling and video work? THAT IS MY DREAM!!!
Oh yeah, and just got a call from a talent manager from the before mentioned company. They want to contract me (after seeing my demo reel) and he says the owner didn’t know what he was talking about… $10/hr is REALLY UNDERSELLING myself.
Feeling pretty good lately. That’s One week of trying and just having contacts.
My camera gets ordered in 2 weeks. And the fun will begin.
Michigan Film Festival.
Oh yeah. and some bad ass traveling.
